The Qi charging in iPhone 15 models remains at 7.5W without any enhancements to fast charging.
During the reveal of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models today, Kaiann Drance from Apple emphasized their compatibility with the Qi2 charging standard. However, this compatibility doesn’t necessarily mean quicker Qi charging.
As per Apple’s specifications, both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro maintain their Qi charging at 7.5W, while MagSafe continues to offer 15W.
Qi2, a fresh wireless charging standard built on Apple’s MagSafe technology, incorporates a Magnetic Power Profile to ensure precise alignment with charging devices and aims to improve energy efficiency for faster charging.
Several companies have introduced Qi2 chargers capable of 15W, matching the speed of MagSafe. But it seems that Apple’s iPhones won’t support the faster 15W Qi2 charging feature.
MagSafe charging speeds haven’t changed, and the rumors about faster wired charging might not be accurate. While there were speculations that the iPhone 15 models might handle faster charging with a 35W charger, Apple’s official tech specs page doesn’t mention any upgrades in fast charging.
The iPhone 15 models are still expected to reach a 50% charge in around 30 minutes using a 20W or higher adapter. Whether a 35W or higher charger will speed up charging is yet to be confirmed upon the devices’ release.
A report reveals Apple’s adoption of the Qi2 wireless charging standard in their upcoming smartphone, according to industry insiders who shared this information with ChargerLab.
This Qi2 support suggests that the phone will enable 15W wireless charging on non-Magsafe chargers, a significant improvement from the iPhone 14 series, which only supported 7.5W wireless charging on non-Magsafe chargers.
This previous limitation in wireless charging speed resembled the restrictions placed on non-MFi-certified products. MFi, an Apple certification, mandates manufacturers to acquire a license for producing Apple accessories.
